How to smooth a leatherette jacket at home

Leatherette is not too whimsical to care for. But this material is much softer than natural leather and more easily served by mechanical stress. When a jacket or other leatherette item is bought at a store, sales consultants take care of its appearance. But it is easier for distributors in the clothing market to give a product cheaper than fiddling with smoothing it. Now there are many types of quite high-quality and not too cheap leatherette, but it still wrinkles with improper storage or transportation.

How to smooth a leatherette jacket

How to iron a jacket

Many immediately discard this method, considering it unsuitable for outerwear. But subject to certain conditions, you can quickly give the jacket a presentable appearance. And do not spoil anything.

It must be remembered that ironing can only expose products on a hop or knit basis. Previously, this leatherette was simply called dermantine, but now its subspecies - vinyl leather - has stood out.

Such clothes can never be ironed on the front side, but only turning the thing inside out. From contact with even a warm iron, ugly wrinkles often appear. It is better to set the temperature to the lowest, that is, 30-40 ° C. Ironing should be without steam.

Hot steam from the iron can only be used in places where creases are not smoothed. Steam can be operated only at a distance (at least 10 cm) or through gauze folded into several layers. For this, the product is hung on a coat hanger or mannequin. If you need to smooth pockets or sleeves, then they should be stuffed with a towel or small rollers of fabric napkins. This will help to give things the right shape.

The hardest part may be to stroke the sleeves. It is good if the ironing board is equipped with special nozzles for ironing them. If there are no such nozzles, you can do the following: put towels rolled up inside the sleeves turned inside out, and then smooth them, like the rest of the jacket.

Water smoothing

Genuine leather products even with unsuccessful storage are smoothed under their own weight, if they are hung on their shoulders. For leatherette, this method may be too long, because the weight of such jackets is many times lower. But such smoothing can be accelerated with ordinary water.

The jacket must be hung on a coat hanger and sprayed from the spray gun. Water droplets will moisturize the material and make it a little heavier. Drying should take place naturally, without the use of hair dryers and heaters. It is not worth hanging a jacket over the battery. If the drying process is accelerated by heating, then this can even lead to damage to things: the material will become roughened and warped.

If the creases are too deep and do not lend themselves to smoothing, then glycerin can be added to the water or difficult places can be sprayed with a special water-repellent spray. These substances soften leatherette and smooth it faster.

The jacket can be smoothed out easily if you put it on in damp weather. For example, go for a walk in the early morning in the fog or walk along the street after rain. One walk may be enough, or you will have to repeat it several times. But this method does not require any costs and can be combined with the implementation of daily tasks, for example, go for a walk with the dog.

Warm steam

Steaming is a folk way of smoothing things not only from leatherette. This method tidied the still heavy dresses of the medieval nobility, which were sewn from expensive fabrics and decorated with stones. You can also restore a jacket from leatherette with warm steam.

Smoothing leatherette jackets with steam

For this, hot water is collected in the bath and a jacket is hung over it from the shoulders. It is better to close the door to the room so that the steam lasts longer. Things need to be allowed to hang over the steam for a while, and when the water has cooled, you can simply leave it in a warm room until it dries completely.

Steam from the water should not be too hot, but only warm. That is, to speed up the process, do not hang a jacket over boiling water in a pan. High temperature often leads to the fact that the material becomes too coarse and does not lend itself to further smoothing.

If after storage the jacket made of leatherette did not take on a very presentable appearance, then it is not necessary to write it off or spend money on restoration in dry cleaning. You can try to give the product a neat appearance and at home. If one of the above methods did not help to achieve the desired result, it is worth trying the following. For example, after wetting from the spray gun, the jacket seemed to become smoother, but wrinkled marks still remained on the pockets. Then these places you can try to level the ferry.
