How to identify a left handed or right handed child?

Each person has two cerebral hemispheres - left and right. Depending on how dominant one or another part of the body is, one of these hemispheres may become the main one. It is this factor that is responsible for which hand the child will use - right or left.

What are the hemispheres responsible for?

So, the factor that the hemisphere is developed in the baby plays an important role - since this will affect his further character, abilities.

  1. The left. It is responsible for a penchant for exact sciences - for example, mathematics, algebra, physics. Such children tend to think analytically, they like logic games. The left hemisphere controls the work of the right limbs.
  2. Right. Responsible for creativity. Such children have good spatial thinking, they are sensitive, emotional natures. From them grow poets, musicians. Also, people with a well-developed left hemisphere have a tendency to draw to develop various schemes and draw drawings. Such children will often experience mood swings, while their gesticulation is very developed, and they speak quickly. Controls the work of the left limbs.

It is believed that already at birth, the child has a dominant hemisphere, but this is not so. They develop unevenly, a child can use different hands in different periods of his life.

How to determine?

Surely parents will be interested to know which particular hemisphere is dominant in their baby. By the age of three, this is really possible, since the child can already completely hold a spoon, he plays with toys and picks up various objects in his hands in order to study them.

So, let’s look at how you can determine whether your child will be left-handed or right-handed:

  1. Track in which river the child holds a toothbrush.
  2. If he crosses his arms over his chest - pay attention to the one that will be on top - it will be dominant.
  3. Ask the baby to collect his hands in the castle and watch which finger is on top.
  4. Let the child stroke the toy - the hand that he will use will become dominant.

An important role is also played by heredity. If in your family, for example, most right-handed people are most likely, the child will write and do most manipulations with his right hand.

Why can not retrain?

As early as 100 years ago, all teachers insisted that children should write in schools exclusively with their right hands. If a child used his left hand, he often became an outcast; both teachers and parents and peers pressed him.

Therefore, as soon as the process of preparing for school began, parents actively retrained their baby - sometimes, even by barbaric methods. After some time, of course, the child got used to writing with his right hand, and did it on an intuitive level, however, such retraining is never in vain. If the child is a retrained left-handed person, he may have problems with spelling, he is not focused, he can make many mistakes during writing, and writes with an inclination in the other direction.

Therefore, if you want your baby to be happy, to boast of good school performance - no need to go against his will.

Recommendations for parents

Left-handed children often write and paint in mirror image. Your task is to teach him how to navigate in space correctly, tell how to write letters, give illustrative examples.

It is possible that a left-handed person up to 3-4 years old will not attend kindergarten - due to the fact that it is difficult for a child to adapt to modes and schedules. Be prepared for frequent mood swings - this has nothing to do with the harmful nature - left-handed people are very sensitive and emotional personalities. It is important for parents to be patient, to ensure that the baby can cope with their emotions. As for classes at the table, it is important to provide the child with maximum comfort - the lamp, textbooks and all the other necessary attributes for him should be placed on the right.

What other methods are there for determining?

If your baby is already at a conscious age, that is, he is 5-6 years old, then you can try the following techniques that will help you recognize whether your baby is left-handed or right-handed:

  1. Give the child a grater and ask them to erase the drawing.
  2. Track which hand will be leading when using the scissors.
  3. Ask the child to transfer fluid from one glass to another (both of which should be half full).
  4. Put a small object in the glass, give the child a spoon and ask him to get the object out of the glass.
  5. Ask your child to open the bottle whose cap is screwed.

If during all these manipulations the child uses his left hand, most likely, he will write in school at the same time, and in everyday life he will also use his left hand. Naturally, in order to get the most accurate result, it is advisable to ask the baby to pass as many tests as possible. When performing certain actions, the child will unconsciously use exactly the hand which one is more comfortable to use - therefore, it is the leading one.

Please note: Parents must ensure equal access to all items that surround the child. No need to put objects on the right (for example) closer, and those on the left - further. Perhaps this will confuse the baby and he will just take the thing that is closer to him. All tests must be carried out in a calm, friendly atmosphere, and even more so, in no case should you put pressure on your child. If the child is not configured to conduct tests, it is not necessary to force him.

There is no need to try to “blind” a person from your child who he is not - in the future he may choose a completely different profession and become an unhappy person. In any case, the task of each parent is to listen to his child, guide him in life and help adapt in this difficult world.
