How to get rid of aphids on roses: 4 effective ways

In April, not only garden flowers wake up, but also the aphid, the main enemy of plants. Green insects crawl around the cottage area in search of food. The victims of bugs are fuchsias, carnations and, of course, roses. The bushes, which aphids have chosen, weaken: the leaves become yellowish and curl, the buds are deformed and do not bloom. Folk remedies will destroy the pests, and if they are powerless, roses will save chemicals.

Folk remedies for aphids

Water and soap

Plants that show symptoms of aphid infection are wiped with a damp sponge. It is moistened in a concentrated solution from laundry or antibacterial soap:

  1. 5-6 l of water are heated on the stove.
  2. 250–300 g of solid soap shavings are thrown into the hot liquid or 200 ml of liquid is poured.
  3. Boil the solution for 5 minutes, then cool and mix thoroughly.
  4. They put on thick rubber gloves. They will protect palms and fingers from scratches and protect weakened roses from bacteria.
  5. A sponge soaked in soapy water is squeezed, and then each leaf and the base of the bush are wiped.
  6. The surviving bugs are crushed by hands, and then the treated roses are watered from the hose to wash off the remnants.

Flowers bathe in the evening, so that the moisture evaporates until the morning. Water droplets attract the sun, which leaves burns on the leaves.

Biological attack

Ants are one of the main causes of aphids. Black and red insects protect pests and transfer them from one bush to another. To defeat the green bugs, you need to destroy the ants:

  1. Spread pieces of double-sided tape or paper treated with non-drying glue around the rose bushes.
  2. Arrange bait with poison, for example, minced meat with borax or honey with boric acid.
  3. Treat the ant trails with unrefined sunflower oil, elderberry or wormwood tincture. Scatter dry or fresh sprigs of peppermint.
  4. Soak the ground around the bushes with essential oils. Suitable eucalyptus, mint and tea tree.
  5. Sprinkle the roots of the plant with cinnamon or lavender powder. You can treat the soil with semolina or millet.

When the aphids do not have any defenders, you need to bring ladybugs to the garden. Spotted insects like the smells of some plants:

  • dill;
  • marigolds;
  • tansy;
  • calendula
  • clover;
  • mustard;
  • coriander;
  • yarrow;
  • sweet clover.

It is not necessary to plant marigolds or tansy around roses. You can hang around the bushes a few twigs of fragrant plants and wait for the ladybugs to fly in the smell. Some gardeners specifically collect spotted insects and bring to the site. If you plant at least one ladybug on a bush that was attacked by green bugs, nothing will remain of the pests in 2-3 days.

Aphids are destroyed by small songbirds: tits, hemp, robins, sparrows and kings. Feathered hunters are lured by feeders with bread crumbs and grain, drinking bowls with water and birdhouses.

Titmouse and sparrows in a matter of days will clean the roses from aphids and other harmful bugs. The method has a minus, because birds, in contrast to ladybugs, eat all insects. Both bad and useful.

Folk remedies

Natural decoctions and infusions destroy aphid colonies in 1–1.5 weeks. They are safe, do not harm pets and birds.

Do this in early spring before the first leaves appear. A week later, the soil is sprayed with copper sulfate: 200 g of the product per 10 liters of liquid.

If there are not many roses, each bush is treated with ordinary Dichlorvos, a plastic bag is put on top. Leave a plastic cover for 30 minutes. Adults die. Aphid larvae can hide on the inside of the leaf. They are washed off with water or crushed by hands.
