Pygmy corridoras is a miniature nimble fish, which is the smallest representative of aquarium inhabitants belonging to catfish. The dimensions of this catfish do not exceed two centimeters. Like most of its relatives - corydoras pygmaeus is a peace-loving bottom fish, living in small flocks.
Wildlife
The native habitat of catfish is Brazil. The most preferable places for catfish are: toljak, tributaries of water bodies (river Rio Madeira). Most often, this small fish can be found in the flooded roots of plants and among aquatic vegetation, catfish moves in natural conditions in large enough packs.
Description of Corydoras Pygmaeus
As mentioned above, pygmy catfish is a rather small fish of the catfish family, which has a slightly elongated body shape, with sides equipped with protection in the form of thin bone plates. The main peculiarity of catfish is in rather strongly developed pectoral and ventral fins. At the same time, a rather long and sharp beam is located on the pectoral fin. The shape of the caudal fin is two-bladed. On the jaws of the fish there are several pairs of antennae.
The pygmy corridor has a delicate grayish-olive color. A black strip is located along the entire length of the fish, ending at the tail with a dark spot of a round shape. Catfish fins are transparent.
As a rule, the females are slightly larger than the males, while the line of the abdomen in them has a more curved shape. You can distinguish between fish by the characteristic feature of the dorsal fin - in males it is spiky, in females it is rounded.
Features of the content of catfish
It is best for catfish pygmies to organize dim lighting. You should also take care of the presence of a sufficiently large number of aquatic plants in which this little fish loves to live. To design an aquarium, snags and other secluded shelters for miniature catfish are perfect.
The ideal solution is to recreate the natural conditions of the Amazon, which today is a real biotope among owners of aquarium fish.
I would also like to recall that the use of driftwood, a large number of plants and fallen leaves in the aquarium can stain its water, the latter will become a characteristic tea color. This should not be a cause for concern, since for catfish of this species, such water is a natural habitat.
Feeding miniature catfish
In food, the smallest catfish in the world are quite unpretentious, since they quietly eat both natural, frozen and artificial feed, which are offered in large quantities at specialized points of sale. However, when choosing food for Corridoras, it should be borne in mind that these fish have not only a miniature body, but also a very small mouth.
In order to achieve the growth of the fish to the maximum size and improve the color - regularly feed the catfish with daphnia and artemia.
Who is the Pygmy Corridor compatible with?
Somik-pygmy is a very peaceful and calm fish, however, it is not suitable for keeping in every aquarium. As a rule, predatory and larger fish often consider the small catfish as their living food. Therefore, the choice of neighbors for the Corridoras should be approached with extreme caution.
Note that such popular inhabitants of home aquariums as gourami and angelfish also pose a danger to pygmy catfish, not to mention other fish, including representatives of catfish.
Shrimps of small sizes, as well as small cyprinids and haracins, will be excellent neighbors for pygmies. Also, other small schooling fish (for example, neons or rhodostomuses) are suitable for sharing.
Recall that in living conditions, pygmy corridors live in flocks, therefore, such pets should be brought in at least 10-15 individuals. Such a solution will help little catfish to feel much more confident, while in the water a flock of several Pygmy Corridors looks very beautiful and impressive. It should also be noted that catfish pygmies, unlike most relatives, prefer the middle layers of water for the main pastime.
Features of reproduction of catfish pygmies
The main incentive for spawning is the replacement of water. Gravy is colder. If the females are ready, spawning begins. At one time, a female pygmy catfish can produce up to 100 eggs, as a rule, it affects the age of the individual, as well as the conditions of detention. The duration of incubation of eggs is about 3-4 days.
The laying of eggs by the female catfish is done on the glass of the aquarium, after which producers should be removed from it, as they can simply eat their future offspring. You should also pay attention to the eggs, if white plaque appears on some of them, they are immediately removed to prevent the spread of infection by the fungus. Infusoria, egg yolk are used to feed the fry.
