How to store prunes at home

How to store prunes at home? Unlike other dried fruits, dried plums do not require any special treatment. She is only interested in low humidity, darkness and coolness. But still, some recommendations must be observed so as not to throw a valuable product into the trash later.

How to store prunes

Packaging and suitable place

The material of containers or containers is absolutely irrelevant. Prune in itself is so fragrant that it is not afraid of extraneous odors. But other products can be soaked. No doubt, the fragrant, juicy smell beckons. Here are just bread or buckwheat with a prune flavor, not everyone likes.

The only thing that interrupts this magical smell is household chemicals. Therefore, even for a short time, do not leave the fruits in one place next to washing powder or dishwashing detergent.

It is recommended to pack the delicacy tightly. For example, a glass jar with a tight lid, a metal container with a screwdriver or a ceramic pot with a silicone plug.

If the cabinet where the prunes will be stored is intended only for it, then more prosaic packaging will work fine:

  • plastic bag with zip fastener
  • wooden or birch bark box
  • cardboard box
  • canvas or linen bag

More durable materials are heat treated. They are poured with boiling water and dried, naturally, after having washed thoroughly with hot water and baking soda.

Fragile materials are sprayed with strong saline and dried thoroughly. Then you can put prunes and put them in storage. Prepare a saline solution like this:

  • In 1 liter of pure drinking water, 500 g of rock salt are thoroughly dissolved.
  • Iodized or extra do not categorically fit!
  • Soak the inside of the boxes and drawers well.
  • Cloth bags can be soaked whole for 2 minutes, then dried thoroughly.

Large stocks of dried fruits can be stored in a specially designated storage room. Of course, if you have it. In this case, you can not puzzle over the packaging, but simply string the fruits on a strong thread. Then it remains only to hang them, like beads on a Christmas tree.

To avoid spoiling the product, you need to quickly dip the threads with the fruits in a weak solution of salt or soda, and then dry them thoroughly. Before use, it remains only to thoroughly rinse the prunes and you can eat.

You can prepare the solution using 2 tbsp. Per 1 liter of pure water. l ordinary table salt or 1 tbsp. l soda. Such treatment is completely unaffected by the taste of dried plums. But it protects well from all kinds of mold bacteria.

All these dances with solutions and threads are not needed if you have a little dried fruit. But when you yourself have dried three buckets of plums, take the method for arming. Because in the refrigerator or on a shelf in the closet, such a quantity of drying simply does not fit.

Tip. This method is only suitable for those who are sure that they will not start a moth or the ubiquitous bugs, because the salt of these gluttonous comrades will not stop.

Fridge

Prunes are perfectly stored in the refrigerator. To do this, they wrap it in aluminum foil, then make several holes in the convolution with a toothpick or skewer. And put on a shelf in the refrigerator door. There the most optimal temperature and adequate ventilation during opening.

Or choose a place on the shelf for vegetables. There is no such humidity as in the whole chamber.

If you need to keep prunes for a long time, then it is best to do this in a freezer.Fruits are sealed, otherwise everything will smell like prunes. Food grade polyethylene or special plastic containers are suitable. And only after that they clean. After defrosting, dried fruits do not lose their vitamin and nutritional value.

Tip. In order not to look at what is frozen there, shrugging your shoulders in surprise, always sign the parcels with a permanent marker. Or put a piece of paper inside with the name of the content and the date of the bookmark.

Possible problems

Prunes are very hygroscopic. It perfectly absorbs moisture from the surrounding air. Be sure to check your stocks once every 2 weeks. Otherwise, instead of treats on one “fine” day, you can get slimy ugly pieces of incomprehensible color. Or worse - covered with a thick layer of mold.

Such dried fruits are not subject to recovery. But slightly moistened can still be saved. They just need to be dried a little in the oven or an electric dryer, and the containers should be washed and wiped dry.

Tip. When buying, be sure to touch the dried plum with your fingers. If brown spots remain on them, a slippery sensation or moisture is felt, then refrain from acquiring. Such dried fruits will not be stored. They quickly grow moldy, stink and slim. When self-preparing prunes, such problems usually do not exist.

Valuable recommendations

  3. Purchased dried plum is stored for no more than 6 months, in the freezer no longer than 10 months. Self-cooked with proper packaging and proper storage conditions can perfectly lie up to 2 years.
