How to make an air freshener at home

Nowadays, many household department stores can buy modern air fresheners, which use mainly artificial flavors as the sprayed liquid in the room, which, although they have a pleasant smell, are quickly saturated and become unpleasant indoors. Also, most of these tinctures by manufacturers are estimated at a fairly decent amount, because many Russians who want a pleasant aroma always flowing at home, make their own air fresheners.

How to make an air freshener

The advantages of self-preparation of a solution of air freshener are quite obvious:

  1. The use of natural ingredients for liquids will not only help to achieve the desired smell, but also positively affect the health of the body as a whole.
  2. The relative low cost of the components.
  3. The unobtrusiveness of the odors emitted by devices (which cannot be said about the “chemical” aromas).

You can use various inexpensive household tools as an air freshener: for example, a spray bottle, a budget device from a store. Finally, you can make some semblance of the device yourself, without using expensive elements. Some housewives do not use such things at all and simply put neatly sliced and beautifully laid out fruits on a platter in the room.

This option also has every right to exist, but it has a rather serious minus: the aroma emanating from chopped fruits can only more or less stably stay in the air for 10-12 hours.

Preparation of solutions of different composition

It is obvious that the basis of various solutions should be those components that produce a sufficiently stable and at the same time pleasant aroma. So, potential ingredients for an air freshener can be (arranged in decreasing order of durability):

  • Citrus fruits (tangerines, oranges, lemons, etc.);
  • A bouquet of coniferous branches;
  • Essential oils;
  • Bouquet of various herbs (usually use mint, lavender, basil).

In the vast majority of cases, artificial substances, which are recommended by manufacturers of spray devices, are created on the basis of precisely the listed natural components. Using any of the above list of groups of ingredients will positively affect both the appearance and the condition of the body as a whole, in particular - immunity.

Tip: to give a pleasant aroma in a rarely visited room, for example, a toilet or a corridor, you can use dried fruits mixed with various herbs in a jar. Usually in the evening the jar is shaken well several times, after which it is left open in a room at night. In the morning it should be closed, in the evening - repeat the procedure described.

To prepare a tincture with a pleasant and persistent aroma, you can use various recipes, and all of them will differ in the proportions of certain components, so it makes sense to bring only one, universal. So, for the solution you will need:

A few citrus fruits (their exact amount depends on the size, but usually they take two or three oranges, one lemon and one grapefruit or lime).

Spray bottle, for example a spray bottle. Water and some vodka.

The order of preparation of the freshener is as follows:

  1. The peel is removed from the fruit and placed in some container, for example, an ordinary glass jar. After that, you can add the peel of another fruit, but one that does not interrupt the smell, but only supplements.Then the peels are poured with about 300 milliliters of vodka, and the can is tightly closed with a plastic lid for three days.
  2. After this period, liquid is poured from the can into the atomizer, and a new batch of peels is loaded into the previously used container. In the sprayer, it is mandatory to add 200-250 ml of water in order to remove the smell of alcohol.
  3. Additionally, you can add flavor or enhance it with the help of essential oils in harmony with the main one.

Custom Air Fresheners

The classic assistant for spreading a pleasant smell in the room is the atomizer: it is very simple to use, it is easy to fill in and change the liquid and you can dispense the sprayed amount of the solution yourself, while purchased fresheners are often mistaken with the volume distributed.

DIY air freshener

But you can use not only it to spread the smell: for example, in modern times various glass glasses (or, in general, candlesticks), sachets and slightly modernized glass bottles are quite popular, and instead of solutions used together with the latter, thick fresheners, respectively set of citrus peels and herbs.

Tip: for use, it is recommended to choose both a beautiful and thick-walled glass. As a replacement, you can use a candlestick or ceramic objects. The containers of the latter type are rarely used, since the liquid from them quickly evaporates, and the aroma disappears a little faster, so you should be prepared for the need to change the solution often.

Upgraded bottles differ from their “relatives”, firstly, in size: usually their volume is not more than 0.3 l. Secondly, they play a more decorative function, because they are decorated in the style of, for example, a bottle of pirate rum.

Finally, the third difference is that they are closed with a cork, but only half: the point is that another fragrant freshener mixed with essential oils flows inside, and the smell only penetrates outward into the room through the cork.

Thick air freshener

For a ceramic or glass cup, special, thick air fresheners are made that can emit a pleasant aroma for a week. To prepare them, the following ingredients are required:

  • Water, essential oils - as a liquid, binder component;
  • Gelatin, glycerin;
  • Cinnamon (to taste, like various herbs);
  • Food colors (to give the thickened freshener an interesting color).

The process of preparing a thick freshener is quite simple and does not require any special culinary skills, you should only adhere to the sequence of the following steps:

  1. A glass of hot water (not boiled) is poured into some shallow container, where after 2-3 tablespoons of gelatin are added. Saucepan is placed on a slow fire. The maximum degree of uniformity should be given to the liquid by constant stirring of the mixture.
  2. Once the gelatin has completely dissolved in water, you can add the rest of the ingredients. The proportions of the added ingredients are established experimentally, but usually one and a half teaspoons of glycerin, 5 teaspoons of essential oils are poured into the liquid. The use of dyes in large quantities is not recommended.
  3. As soon as the mixture regains homogeneity, it can be poured into pre-prepared forms, where it can take on shape and finally solidify. To do this, you can use the classic form for the preparation of flour products.

As soon as the air freshener takes shape, it can be carefully removed from the metal container and placed in an already prepared glass or ceramic glass. By the way, over time, a small crust may form along the edges of the freshener: it needs to be cut off, and the areas that have been opened should be greased with oil or glycerin.This will further increase the intensity of the emitted aroma.

Sachet

In the classical and initial sense, the sachet was a set of several small pillows connected among themselves that were placed in various sets of linen to scare away moths and other pests. With the proliferation of pills and other remedies for a variety of insects, sachets have become more of an air freshener than anything else.

Sachet air freshener

Making a sachet-type air freshener is quite simple: all you need is a small (10-14 x 25-30 cm) piece of natural fabric (usually silk or cotton is used), a small ribbon for dressing and, in fact, the ingredients themselves. They can be submitted:

  • Again peeled citrus;
  • Dried berries of barberry, currant, etc .;
  • Mint leaves and rosemary;
  • Spices
  • Sawdust of wood, which are able to give a unique detail to the entire fragrance composition.

An ordinary pouch should be sewn from shreds of fabric, in which one face must be left un sewn, but it should be possible to pull it together or loosely close it with buttons. The upper edge of the sachet is usually decorated with a fringe, and the bag itself is additionally attached to any decor item, for example, a soft toy, a vase of flowers, etc.

Sachet is densely packed with all the listed ingredients of a “dry” freshener, after which it is actively shaken several times and finally pulled together first with a tape across, and then near an open face. For enhanced odor distribution, a few drops of essential oils can be used, however it is recommended to do this before mixing.

In conclusion, it should be noted that a healthy and cozy atmosphere of the house is formed, including due to the smell. It is necessary to monitor the air quality in the apartment, observe the ventilation mode of the room and regularly use fresh air fresheners. This will not only provide pleasant aromas in the air, but also positively affect the state of the body as a whole.
