How to remove tinting from glass yourself

The tinted film pasted on the car windows is no longer a surprise. This is a common element of tuning, helping to significantly transform the "iron horse", giving it a more serious look. But sometimes circumstances force the driver to remove the tint. In this case, knowledge is useful.

How to remove tinting from glass

This article describes several useful ways that will be useful not only for experienced motorists, but also for beginners. The proposed methods will help to cope with the removal of the tint film.

Why the driver is forced to remove tint

In most cases, the reason is a fine for violating the rules of tinting. It is forbidden to glue any film on the windshield, except for the top strip. The front side windows are allowed to paste over with tinting, which transmits at least 70% of the light. The rear windows have no restrictions, however, if a mirror film is glued on them, then it should be removed.

Another common cause is film obsolescence. Over a long period of use, tinting fades or various defects appear on it. Bubbles of air and delamination of the film give the car a not presentable appearance.

How to remove tint yourself

Toning can be quickly and efficiently removed in a car service. But if it is not possible to use the services of a specialist, then you can remove the film yourself. The process of glass uninstallation for a beginner can take a long time. To speed things up, ask someone to help you.

An important stage of tint removal is preparation. All covers and gaskets that may be damaged by tools must be removed. There are four simple methods for removing an old tint film:

Easy tearing off the film
You will need:

  • sharp knife;
  • a little patience.

The main advantage of this method is the minimum set of necessary tools at hand. In the upper corner of the glass, pry off the edge of the tint. Then start pulling the film toward you and down a little. Tinting needs to be separated diagonally from the glass. Keep it taut over the entire length of the gap and pull it slowly. It will take a lot of time. But the tearing process can be accelerated. To do this, divide the tint into strips 15 cm wide. Use the knife carefully so as not to damage the glass.

Using a cleaning solution
You will need:

  • water;
  • any detergent;
  • atomizer;
  • sharp knife.

Prepare a solution, it should include: one liter of water and about thirty milliliters of detergent. Pour the solution into a small spray bottle and mix well. Spray the mixture onto the top edge of the glass and wait about one minute. During this time, the solution will penetrate between the film and the glass, weakening the adhesive base. After waiting, peel off the film with a sharp knife at the edge of the glass and begin to gently pull it down.

After separating a small area, again spray the solution at the place of separation and wait half a minute. Then continue to separate a small portion of the film - and so on to the bottom of the glass. It is important to remember that everything must be done without jerking, distributing the efforts evenly.

By heating
How to remove tint by heating
You will need:

  • building or household hair dryer;
  • partner.

The best tool for removing old tint film is any building hair dryer. You can use household appliances, but the whole process will take much more time.

When using a hair dryer, set the button to the minimum temperature, and set the maximum on the home appliance. Again, start from the top edge of the secla. Warm the glass as best as possible and pull the edge of the film. Separating a small piece, again warm the bottom part of the tint. Thus, it will be easy to remove the entire film from the glass.

It is most convenient to do this procedure for two people. One warms up the film, and the second slowly and constantly pulls it down, tearing it from the glass. You need to remember that you should not do this in the winter outdoors. In this case, a crack from a sharp temperature difference will appear on the glass.

Using a special solvent
You will need:

  • solvent can;
  • scraper;
  • dry rags.

In stores special liquid is sold in a spray bottle that dissolves tint. It is applied to the film and left for fifteen minutes. After the specified time, the dissolved tint will easily separate from the glass surface. It is also used to remove glue residue. The liquid easily penetrates the door trim, leading to metal corrosion or circuit wiring. To prevent this, put a rag on top of the door trim.

Features of removing tinting from the rear window

Difficulties in removing tinting from the rear window appear due to electric threads. They can easily be damaged by tearing the film in the usual way. To prevent this, you need to be careful in work. Difficulty also causes an inconvenient rear window position.

To separate the film, you need to start from the side and along the threads. The effort at separation should be smooth and without jerking. To accelerate the detachment of tinting from glass, use a washing solution. After removing the tint, it remains to remove glue residue from the surface of the glass.

How to remove glue residue

In most cases, any cleaning agent and soft scraper are sufficient to remove adhesive base residues. If the glue on the surface of the glass has been for a long enough time, then it is better to remove it with acetone, gasoline or high degree alcohol. In this case, it is necessary to protect the skin of the doors and seats of the car from the ingress of these substances. Remember to use hand and respiratory protection.

This article has covered some simple ways. All of them are tested in practice by many motorists. Choose for yourself what suits you best. Be careful while working and then you will succeed.
