How to warm a parrot in a cold room

Parrots come from exotic countries, therefore they are poorly tolerated by drafts and cold. In winter, due to heating problems, the temperature in the apartment can drop to + 15ºС and lower. Birds begin to freeze and hurt. They lose their appetite, feathers fall out, and if nothing is done, pets die. The optimum temperature for exotic birds is from + 18-20 degrees. No drafts. Avoid temperature changes.

How to warm a parrot if it's cold at home

Cell location

The parrot's house should be on the table or under the ceiling. You can not put the cage on the floor, by the window or next to the door, which is constantly opened, creating drafts. The cell can be leaned against the battery if it is warm:

  • Cover the bird housing with a woolen shawl or a thick blanket, leaving a small ventilation hole.
  • Put the cage on the chair, sliding it to the battery.
  • Seal the windows, do not open the window, under which the parrot lives, so as not to blow it.
  • Leave a gap in the front of the room, so that the feathered pet does not suffocate from the heat.

Electric heaters

It is recommended to use an oil cooler. “Fans” dry the air and skin of the parrot, which will cause feathers to fall out. The cage is installed at a distance of 1.5–2 m from the heater; you can additionally cover it with a blanket.

Bird housing should be placed in the far corner of the room, and fenced off with a blanket or coverlet. This manipulation will save money, because it’s easier to heat a small section of the room than all housing. It is recommended to place a saucer or bowls of water near the radiator, or hang a wet rag from the cage. This will protect the parrot from heat stroke and moisturize the air.

Handy tools for heating a parrot

An alternative to a radiator is a table lamp. It is placed next to the cage. It will gradually heat up, warming the air. They recommend using a conventional lamp, economical options in such a situation are powerless. Varieties of red or blue are suitable, you can buy green or orange. Parrots like such shades, because they do not irritate the eyes of the bird.

Of fluorescent lamps, it is advised to use only full-spectrum ones, otherwise the pet loses its ability to see, and becomes lethargic. To prevent the parrot from plucking feathers, on sunny days the cage is placed in front of the window. Natural light is good for your pet. Ultraviolet light will warm the bird, plus it stimulates the production of vitamin D so that the feathered bird remains alert and active.

Tip: The lamp should illuminate 2/3 of the cells. In the far corner, you need to create a shaded corner in which the bird can hide from artificial rays. If the lamp works for a long time, it becomes too hot in the parrot’s house and the pet runs the risk of heat stroke.

Pet Shop Heaters

In pet stores you can find special lamps designed to heat terrariums. They are suitable for saving a parrot from the cold.

Sold in pet stores and thermal mats: the device is placed at the bottom of the cage, and it maintains the optimum temperature inside. An alternative is thermal cords. Flexible heaters can be placed in a parrot's house, wound on rods, or hung from the outside.

Liquid heating

No electricity? Time to use grandmother's device - hot water. There are two options: a plastic bottle and a pan.

In the first case, it is necessary to arm with a container that fits in a cage and find an old wool sock.Pour hot water into the bottle, tighten it tightly so that the liquid does not leak out, otherwise the parrot may burn itself. Wrap the container with a sock or piece of thick cloth. A peculiar battery will last for several hours, depending on the air temperature in the apartment.

Sick parrots are advised to arrange steam inhalations. In a large saucepan, heat the water, or prepare a herbal decoction. Place a container with hot liquid near the cage, and move the lid a few millimeters. Essential oils are added to the water for the sick bird: eucalyptus or orange.

Parrot housing can be put on a pot of hot water, then the cage will be heated from below.

Instead of water, salt is used:

  • Pour the dry ingredient into the pan without oil, and heat.
  • Pour into a linen bag, or a piece of cloth that is tightly tied.
  • Wrap with a towel or sock so that the parrot does not burn.

In emergency situations, a hot boiled egg will fit, and even jacket potatoes. The products are placed in a sock, and placed in a bird house.

Elementary actions

If the house lacks electricity and hot water, and the batteries are colder than ice from the freezer, a blanket will save the bird. Wrap the cage, leaving a small gap for air circulation, and put on the cabinet.

The parrot can be planted in a woolen sock, or a warm nest can be built from the old hat. Inside, put cotton wool, shreds of fabric and other items that will help the feathered pet warm up.

It is useful to let the bird out of the cage so that it stretches its wings. Physical activity accelerates blood, and helps to warm up. The parrot will be able to independently find a place in which he will be warm and comfortable.

A few words about the diet

There should always be food in the feeder, because a well-fed bird freezes less than a hungry one. Pour warm water or a herbal decoction of chamomile or mint into the drinker. To prevent colds in drinking, add lemon juice or honey.

Prohibited Tricks

  1. A parrot cannot be kept near a gas stove, otherwise it will be affected by poisonous fumes.
  2. It is forbidden to leave a bird in the kitchen alone, because in search of a source of heat it can fall into a pot with hot soup, a cup or a teapot.
  3. If you heat the air in the cage to 30–40 degrees during the day, and turn off all heaters at night, the feathered pet will get sick.
  4. Parrots, who decided not to give up water procedures, must be dried with a hairdryer or towel. Do not leave the bird wet in a cool room.

Domestic parrots are more afraid of drafts than cold, so a table lamp or a woolen scarf will be enough to heat a feathered pet. It is necessary to monitor the pet's food, and do not overdo it with a radiator, hot water and other devices.
