How to get rid of mold in a washing machine

Does the washing machine smell damp even after prolonged airing? Do black spots appear on the rubber cuff or powder container? Do things give out mustiness after washing? Symptoms indicate mold. The fungus is dangerous for family members, because it reduces immunity, causes chronic bronchitis and inflammation of the brain. The machine affected by mold is thoroughly disinfected to stop the spread of spores and destroy microorganisms.

How to get rid of mold in a washing machine

Cleaners

Black coated parts are washed with a stiff sponge or brush. Use special antifungal agents, for example, Astonish or Savo sprays. Domestos is also suitable, which will destroy the mold and remove the smell of dampness.

Cover your mouth and nose with a respirator or gauze bandage, put on your hands gloves for washing dishes. Antifungal agents emit toxic fumes, so it is important to protect yourself from intoxication.

Apply Domestos or another substance to the parts, grease the rubber cuff, pour into powder and rinse aid containers. Wait 2-3 hours, then rinse the rest of the product from the machine with a hard sponge. Parts are rinsed several times. The cleaning agent may form a film on the inside of the drain hose or reservoir. During washing, the antifungal composition will be absorbed into the clothes and cause allergic rashes.

The sponges that washed the mold are thrown away. They are a source of fungal spores that multiply rapidly and spread throughout the house.

Cleaning parts from black coating is just the first step. Mold can lurk in hard-to-reach places, therefore, after washing the washing machine, they begin to disinfect.

Bleach and high temperature

Set the maximum temperature, usually 90–95 degrees. Pour 1 liter of bleach containing chlorine into the powder container. For example, inexpensive "White" or some other means. Start the wash, but leave the drum empty.

After 30 minutes, turn off the machine, leaving the water inside, or delay the start for 3-4 hours. Let the drum and the remaining parts soak in a solution of chlorine. Then the equipment is started, and when the rinse mode is turned on, 2-3 cups of table vinegar are poured into the air conditioning section.

Do not mix components, otherwise the product may damage the rubber parts. In a gentle embodiment, instead of bleach with chlorine, edible or calcined salt is used. 400-500 g of powder is poured into the tray and the maximum temperature is set. The smell of dampness is removed with citric acid, which is added to the rinse water instead of vinegar.

After disinfection, the machine is wiped with a clean dry towel and the door is left open for a day. It is advisable to remove the powder tray, because water may stagnate in the container. A window is opened in the bathroom to provide ventilation.

Fresh aroma and no mold

Fungus' favorite spot is a rubber cuff? Copper sulfate will help.

Blue vitriol from mold in a washing machine

  1. Put a pinch of the product in a glass of water, stir until the additive is dissolved.
  2. Infuse the solution for 1-2 hours, so that there are no dry particles that can corrode the gum.
  3. Apply a sulfate-based product to the cuff with a toothbrush or sponge.
  4. Process hard to reach places, leave for a day, so that chemistry destroys all fungal spores.
  5. After 24 hours, prepare a solution of detergent or laundry soap.
  6. Use a soft sponge to remove the remains of vitriol together with a black crust.

Be sure to wear gloves, otherwise chemistry will cause allergies or burns. The cuff is disinfected, the drum has come:

  1. Pour citric acid into the container for washing powder. It will take 2-3 packs.
  2. Throw 1-2 clean kitchen towels into the machine so that the equipment does not work idle.
  3. Duration of washing - 1-1.5 hours. Select a mode for synthetics or other dense fabric so that the machine works at maximum. The temperature is not lower than 90 degrees.
  4. Be sure to include rinsing with clean water.

Is there a smell of mold? So, the fungus managed to spread to the filter. It is better to call a professional who can carefully remove the part and clean or put in a new one.

Cheap and fast

Has a black coating appeared on the rinse aid container? Remove the tray, rinse under the tap and brush with soda and detergent with a toothbrush. Put on a rag and dry, and then return to place.

Buy on the market a package of the cheapest powder. Pour hot water into the washing machine, pour 1-2 tablespoons of an inexpensive product into the container. Turn on the technique for literally 3-5 minutes, leaving the drum empty. Throw another 10-15 g of cheap powder inside the machine, run. After completing a single wash, forcefully drain the water. Do not rinse, let an alkaline layer remain on the walls, which will protect the equipment from mold.

Domestos and citric acid

In advanced cases, only heavy artillery will save. You will need an aggressive cleaning agent, Domestos. It corrodes even rust, and copes with mold in minutes.

The first step is to wear rubber gloves and close the windows in the bathroom. Apply liquid to the drum and rubber cuff, carefully rubbing the product into the part with a hard sponge. Close the machine and leave to sour.

After 4 hours, select a rinse, do not wash. Turn on the equipment and fill the machine with three tablespoons of citric acid. Wait until the rinse stops. Switch to washing. Water should be very hot from +90 degrees. Put 200 g of citric acid in a powder container. Start the process.

It remains to wipe the drum and ventilate the machine. Guaranteed fresh aroma and no black coating. Citric acid will also clean the TEN from the scum layer. If something is cracked or falls off during washing, it is recommended that you stop the process and look into the drain hose to remove pieces of brown plaque from there.

There is a second way to get rid of mold with citric acid:
Mold citric acid in a washing machine

  1. The component is mixed with cheap washing powder, you can add a little bleach.
  2. Dilute the mass with water to make a thick slurry.
  3. The paste is treated with a drum, a tray for an air conditioner and a rubber cuff.
  4. Rub the product thoroughly into the parts using an old toothbrush or sponge.
  5. Leave for a day, closing the washing machine.

Then the residues are washed in the rinse mode, the equipment is switched to boiling and the timer is set for 4-6 minutes. The machine after this procedure smells good and looks like new.

Peroxide Disinfection

Although chlorine and harsh chemicals remove mold in one go, they help harden the rubber parts. The cuff and the drain pipe become covered with small cracks and fail. If there is a little black coating and there is no strong musty smell, we recommend using peroxide:

  • Pour 200 g of ordinary soda into the powder compartment.
  • Add peroxide, preferably in tablets. Enough 10 pieces.
  • Launch the wash by choosing a temperature of +90 degrees.
  • The machine should work in enhanced mode for 20-30 minutes, then include rinsing.

It remains to take out all the removable parts and place them on a towel. Wipe the drum with a dry cloth, remove and rinse the filter.

Did mold remain even after treatment with peroxide or Domestos? It is recommended to replace the parts of the washing machine: tray, drain hose, rubber cuff or filter. The main thing is to determine what part of the equipment has become a source of infection.

Prevention

It is easier to prevent the appearance of the fungus than to fight plaque and unpleasant odors later on. Pour citric acid into the washing machine every month and turn on the appliance without loading laundry into the drum. The additive will clean the heating devices of scale and bacteria, protect the device from mold.

One of the causes of the fungus is rinsing agents. The more expensive the air conditioner for clothes or linen, the worse the washing machine. After the product, a thin film remains on which the mold propagates. The tray in which the rinse aid was washed thoroughly after washing, the drum is wiped inside with a damp cloth.

The machine is not designed to store dirty and clean clothes. If you keep the sheets and socks in the drum, not only a fungus will appear, but also a sharp unpleasant smell, which even citric acid can not get rid of.

It is difficult to deal with mold. The fungus actively multiplies and stays on washing clothes, bedding and children's toys. It spreads throughout the house, attacking the immunity of all family members. But protecting yourself is simple, just ventilate and regularly clean the machine so that the black coating does not have a single chance.
