Amethyst python

Description

The maximum length that an already mature python can reach is 4 meters. Rare exceptions can reach up to 5 meters in length.

As for the color, the color may be different. Most often, yellow-green or olive shades prevail. Each southern amethyst python has a pale strip on its neck. Usually there are more strips behind the strips, however, there are species that have absolutely no color in the tail area.

Habitat

Southern amethyst python can be found in southern New Guinea, as well as in southern Irian Jaya. They prefer humid places, and most often lives in tropical forests and swamps.

Sometimes you can stumble upon a python's dwelling close to people, which can be quite dangerous. Snakes love to steal chicken coops or just crawl into houses. You can also meet python along the river, road or see him hanging on a tree.

Nutrition

In the wild, pythons are considered dangerous predators. Their prey can be different, ranging from small warm-blooded, and ending with victims, which are several times larger in size than the python itself.

Can python become manual?

In fact, keeping such a pet at home is a very dangerous and risky business. The snake is considered predatory, which means that it can attack at any moment. That is why it is worth treating reptile care with great responsibility.

Typically, problems may arise with the content of wild reptiles. If it is possible to get a python born in captivity, then there is a chance to make it tame.

By its behavior, the python resembles Cheney's carpet python, however, each species still has its own character. At times, one month is enough for a southern python to become calm, and sometimes the process of taming can drag on for a long time. A good way to speed up the taming is to periodically take the python in your arms and hold for several minutes.

Behavior features

Features of the behavior of amethyst python
A distinctive feature of the southern python is pretense calm. He can hang for hours or lie in one place, pretending to be absolutely indifferent to what is happening around him. However, it is not. Python hopes he will be given food, and is looking forward to this moment. The predator monitors every movement and is ready at any moment to respond to any excitement around. Gorgeous big eyes come to their aid, as well as a huge number of thermal locating pits located on the body. All this together with excellent sense of smell and allows the southern amethyst python to be a leader among reptile hunters.

Breeding

During the period of sexual behavior, male pythons show typical signs of courtship, which are characteristic of all snakes. They are as follows:

  • Sitting down to the female;
  • Rubbing her nose along her body;
  • Alignment of bodies;
  • Stimulation;
  • Copulation.

Mating time can vary within wide limits. Sometimes a couple is enough for eight hours, sometimes the process is delayed for a longer period.

Pregnancy

As soon as the female becomes pregnant, she begins to look for a place with a high enough temperature to warm her own body.On the thirtieth day, every pregnant female has molt, after which the color becomes black. After that, she practically stops moving and all the time of pregnancy lies, curled up in the shape of a hive.

As soon as the time comes to lay eggs, the female begins to crawl in a few hours in search of a suitable place. It should be warm and humid. Therefore, if the masonry process occurs at home, it is necessary to thoroughly warm the terrarium and periodically spray it with liquid. Usually egg laying occurs early in the morning and lasts until noon.

The number of eggs laid can be different and mainly depends on the age of the snake and the size of its body.

Newborns

The best conditions for newborn pythons are a rather humid climate. This is necessary because the baby’s body is dehydrated very quickly due to thin skin. Also, humidity will help the baby to quickly lose the remains of the umbilical cord and yolk sac.

The skin of a newborn has its own peculiarity - it wrinkles from an excess of moisture. Wrinkles can be seen on the neck and head. Usually molting occurs on the fifteenth day after hatching, but the process may take a month.

If, again, care for the babies takes place at home, then it is necessary to constantly monitor the humidity of the terrarium. This becomes especially important during molting of babies. After the first molt, you must feed the little python and then do it every week. An excellent option would be rat naked or mouse hairy.

Southern amethyst python, of course, is a dangerous animal. However, following him is quite interesting.
