This species got its name due to the characteristic coloring of the body - black and purple, which in a fairly bright light has a glossy tint. I would like to note that according to unofficial data, representatives of this species are considered the largest reptiles in North America in length.
Habitat
This species is most widespread in the western part of the continent (found in the forests of South Carolina, in the west of Louisiana. Florida, Alabama.).
These fairly large snakes choose their place of residence carefully, since this species mainly leads a terrestrial tree lifestyle, respectively, for its nest, it often chooses animal burrows underground or natural cavities in the ground.
According to the observations of many travelers, this type of snake is quite aggressive, if it is possible to catch the reptile, the latter emits a rather fetid secret, thereby scaring off its potential enemy.
Power Features
The basis of the diet of this type of snake as indigo is, as a rule, a variety of rodents, small species of birds, poultry (mainly chickens), as well as other species of reptiles. Living in close proximity to natural sources of water, this species is already preying on snakes, small invertebrates, fish, lizards, toads.
Since the indigo snake is able to hunt poisonous relatives, respectively, it is believed that it is not susceptible to their poison. However, this is not the case if there was a skirmish between snakes, and the poisonous species fought back the drimarhon, poisoning the latter with its poison, in this case the reptile will live, but will have damage that, as a rule, disappears after several links (under the damage tissue necrosis is implied).
Number
Although just a few decades ago, drimarhons were a fairly common species, however, to date, the situation has changed radically. The rapid decline in the population of this species of reptile is due to the activation of their natural enemies - the Mustangs, which simply destroy the representatives of this species in natural habitat.
Content Features
The indigo snake is quite interesting for observing a reptile, therefore it is not at all surprising that many people choose these representatives of the family of supper as pets for keeping at home.
It should be borne in mind that for keeping adult dreamharhons, a terrarium of a sufficiently large volume will be required - at least 300 mm in height and 600 mm in length. In the interior of the future home for the snake, it is desirable to arrange a lot of different shelves. For litter, wood chips are a great solution.
I would like to draw attention to the fact that indigo snakes are very sensitive to dirt reptiles, so cleaning in a snake house should be carried out as often as possible.
Dreamharhons are reptiles that have a good appetite, therefore, in addition to regular feeding (2 times a week), you should take care of the variety of food for an exotic pet. The diet should include rodents, amphibians, lizards, small mammals, as well as a variety of artificial feeds that can be purchased at a specialized pet store. Important: you should not overfeed your pet, choose medium-sized objects as a victim.
