Can a castrated cat want a cat?

Castration of a cat today is a frequent procedure. The owners turn to such a decision for various reasons: in order to avoid various diseases (for medical reasons), so that the cat stops marking its territory, so that it does not run along the streets, does not participate in “battles”, and does not breed homeless animals. Most cat owners are sure that after castration, the animal will forever forget about instincts. Such an opinion is often erroneous. And after the operation, some males are attracted to the opposite sex.

The reasons for the sexual attraction of a cat after castration

Castration is a simple surgical operation in which the testis is removed. It is best to operate the cat for up to a year, until the instinct for reproduction has appeared. It is important to note that it is not advisable to castrate an animal under the age of 8 months, since its body has not yet formed completely and this could lead to serious complications in the future.

Do not forget that any contact with another animal can lead to infection of various types of diseases, parasites, etc. Castration will help get rid of such risks.

It is believed that after removal of the gonads, the sexual attraction of the animal ceases. In particular, it is, but exceptions to the rules are always found. In such cases, the behavior of cats remains the same as before surgery. The most important reason is if castration was done after the active sexual life of the male. This is the so-called cat desire on an instinctive level. There are also a number of other reasons why the animal after castration does not change its behavior with respect to the cat:

  1. Lack of masterful attention (castrated cats become more domestic, requiring a constant manifestation of interest in their person).
  2. Hormonal residues (hormonal levels decrease gradually over several weeks).
  3. Stress response.
  4. The presence of another cat / cat in the house.
  5. Jealousy (especially pronounced when a child or a new family member appears).
  6. Failure in the body.
  7. An excess of testosterone (the hormone that is responsible for the sexual attraction of the male).

A separate role in the behavior of the animal is played by heredity, character and diet. If, after castration, the cat not only does not change its attitude towards the female, but on the contrary becomes more aggressive and persistent, it is necessary to show it to the doctor after 3-4 months. Most likely, the animal has health problems.

It happens that sex drive is a commonplace mistake of a doctor. Perhaps a young inexperienced specialist removed only one testicle, and the owner did not say that the second one remained in the abdominal cavity due to a birth defect (cryptorchidism). In this case, the owner will have to re-operate. That is why it is not advisable to save on such an operation and turn to pseudo-professionals.

It is not difficult to deal with the cat’s attraction after castration: it is necessary to use hormonal therapy, which is prescribed by the doctor.

Is castration necessary?

Nature created cats with a strong instinct for reproduction. He will achieve his goal by any means. During a hormonal explosion, the animal becomes aggressive, especially for apartment cats, which are limited in walking. A pet for which walking is not a limitation can go on a “spree” for several days and live quietly without food and water. Returning with exhaustion, with various types of injuries.

Positive aspects of castration:

  • the animal stops marking the housing;
  • Don't scream, demanding a female around the clock;
  • at any opportunity not in a hurry to the street;
  • the likelihood of different types of diseases is reduced;
  • on average, the life cycle increases by 2-4 years.

The negative sides of castration:

  • there is a tendency to a rapid increase in weight;
  • urolithiasis may occur;
  • the animal becomes lazy, indifferent, inhibited;
  • sometimes the habit of tagging remains;
  • in rare cases, the manifestation of aggression.

Preparation for surgery

14 days before castration, the cat must be given pills for worms and complete all vaccinations prescribed by the veterinarian.

It is also necessary:

  1. Take urine and blood tests.
  2. A preliminary examination of the doctor. In the case of cardiovascular disease or liver disease, any doctor will refuse the operation and will prescribe an additional full examination of the animal. This is due to the fact that castration can be fatal.
  3. The cat should not be overweight or underweight.

The owner needs to know that even if the animal suddenly showed a desire for mating, then this is not for long. After a certain amount of time has passed, the cat’s desires will weaken and disappear altogether. The owner should be patient and surround his pet with maximum care and attention. Such a pet will quickly pacify and cease to bother family members.
