When to start kitten feeding?

During the first month, kittens should be fed by their mother. Then they continue to consume milk, but this is not enough for them to fully develop. Therefore, from this age, kittens should be gradually accustomed to ordinary food.

When to start feeding kittens

When the kittens turn one month old, they need to constantly provide them with access to water. A bowl of water should be placed away from the food container. Dishes for animals should be made of metal or porcelain. Plastic containers should not be used. Experts recommend putting one bowl of water in each room so that the animals can always drink.

Lure

When starting feeding, it is important to remember that along with this process, we instill kittens with eating habits. Feeding requires the following rules.

  1. Every day, no more than one new product can be added to the kitten’s general diet. In this way, it will be possible to understand how a kitten reacts to a particular food. If any food is not suitable for him, then the product is removed from the diet.
  2. At this age, it is contraindicated for kittens to give minced meat, as the body is not able to absorb it.
  3. The first meat of the kitten should be beef. And only after they learn to chew it, it will be possible to add poultry meat.
  4. If you plan to accustom your little pet to dry food, this is best done gradually. Such food is bred in large quantities of water.
  5. Starting complementary foods, vitamins are added to the food that the animal needs at this particular age.

Monthly age

Feeding small kittens is recommended when they turn 3 weeks old. But the cat should continue to feed them milk. Kittens should receive food every 4 hours. These should be very small servings of soft, warm food.

If you will give dry food in the future, bait should occur to them. But for this, a special food is selected, which is soaked, and then spread across the sky of the animal. Next, a bowl is placed in front of the kitten, into which a little soaked feed is poured. When the kitten begins to eat from the bowl itself, the feed begins to breed with less fluid. By the age of 2 months, the food begins to be given in a dry form.

The kitten needs to soften, rub or grind all food. Every day, the following foods should be present in the diet: oatmeal, cottage cheese, raw lean meat, greens, vegetables. Each week they give egg yolk, boiled sea fish, soft cheese.

The kitten must be taught to chew and eat meat. A tiny piece is put in the baby’s mouth. This is done daily until he learns to chew himself. Further, the amount of meat can be increased, pieces can be larger.

If you can’t chew at all, try giving him some baby food. To help the pet learn, mashed meat is spread across its palate, and then put a little in a bowl. When the pet eats on its own, grated meat can be added a little to ordinary food.

After the kitten learns to eat, you can add one product from the list above. In addition to oatmeal, buckwheat, and sometimes rice, may be included in the diet. When all of the listed products are entered into the menu, you can give the animal such a set at a time:

  • The basis should be meat, and sometimes fish.
  • 3 times less than the amount of meat, cottage cheese or porridge is added to the bowl.
  • Some vegetables.

Each week, yolk and some cheese are added to this menu.

At this age, offal can also be added (lungs, liver, etc.). They must be boiled. It is recommended to feed the kitten as often, but in larger portions.A three-month-old kitten can be fed 4 times.

And at the age of 4 months, the kitten's diet should coincide with the nutrition of an adult cat, but at the same time its portion should be slightly less. It can be fed three times a day. By this time, milk cannot be given; it is replaced with cream or yogurt.

Feeding kittens of different breeds

  1. Maine Coon. These kittens are larger in size than others. Therefore, they need large amounts of food. At the age of 2 months, he should eat 130-140 g of meat, 40 g of vegetables, 35 g of dairy products, as well as about 15 g of cereals. These kittens are recommended to add salt to the food. Many do not agree with this, therefore it is better to abstain from this advice. Before giving a kitten vitamins or supplements, it is necessary to consult a veterinarian. This applies to representatives of any breed.
  2. Sphinxes. All representatives that belong to this group of breeds have one feature. They often suffer from heart and vascular diseases. Therefore, you should take care of the health of the sphinx kitten from an early age. They should be given only dietary meat. It can be beef, rabbit, chicken. But pork is not suitable for them. It is not recommended to give it to all cats in general, but for sphinxes this meat is under a special ban. At the beginning of complementary foods, lean veal is an ideal option. It can be both raw and boiled. Kittens of this breed should be fed more often than others. Until the age of 2 months, the sphynx kitten should eat 6-8 times a day. And until the age of 5 months they should eat 4 times. At the age of six months they are fed 3 times, and from 9 months - 2.
  3. British Kittens of these breeds, as well as Scottish, are not recommended to give completely low-fat dairy products. You can’t feed them very fatty either. The best option is a fat content of about 2-4%. They can start giving dry food only after the animals are 2 months old. And little kittens are fed only with natural products. To transfer a kitten to food, they gradually begin to sprinkle it in food. Every day it should be more and more, and the remaining products - less.
